The Problem36 million businesses in America need insurance—it's not optional. 77% are underinsured. 40% have no coverage at all. The distribution system failed them: too slow, too opaque, too confusing.Over 90% of commercial insurance is still human-led. We're building the inverse: 90%+ AI-led, pushing toward the higher 90s. Not by patching legacy workflows—by building AI that makes humans more effective, improves the customer experience, and eliminates friction at every step. We're adding ~1,000 customers per month. We've grown 100x since last year. We're looking to do even more this year—and that's why we're hiring. You'll build the team and the systems the rest of engineering depends on. When they compound, everyone gets faster. The ThesisHarper runs 200+ services across Railway and AWS. We orchestrate N parallel agentic workloads. Our AI systems make thousands of decisions a day, and every decision needs to be traceable, evaluated, and cheaper to run tomorrow than it is today. The infrastructure underneath all of that is the difference between a company that scales and one that stalls.Great platform engineering here isn't invisible—it's the reason product ships fast. When observability catches a silent failure before a customer does. When a pooling layer makes connection exhaustion a non-issue. When developer velocity doubles because someone built the tool nobody knew they needed. That leverage compounds across every other engineer on the team. The RoleThis role is open both to an experienced EM and to someone on the path to becoming an EM who doesn't yet have significant management experience—we're happy to bring that person on and support the transition. This is a team that still needs to be built. We have 2 people in it today, and we believe this area needs significant investment at Harper. The role owns three things: infrastructure (cloud, third-party vendors, and everything surrounding it), developer productivity (making sure we're genuinely an AI-first shop, with the right AI tooling and harnesses in place for every other engineering team to be successful), and SRE and production support (production discipline is top of mind as we head into a high-growth, high-scale phase—we need someone who has run an SRE function before). Each of these three areas can grow into a larger team of its own over time. The team is 2 people today, growing to five to six over the next three months. Because the team is small, whoever takes this role—EM or TLM—will need to be hands-on at the start, working directly with the team and doing the work themselves. What You'll DoOwn infrastructure — cloud, third-party vendors, and everything surrounding itBuild developer productivity — the AI tooling and harnesses that make every other engineering team genuinely AI-firstOwn SRE and production support — bring production discipline as we head into a high-growth, high-scale phaseBuild out the team — grow from 2 people to five to six over the next three monthsStay hands-on — with a team this small, work directly alongside your engineers and do the work yourself, not just direct itGrow each function over time — infrastructure, developer productivity, and SRE/production support can each become a larger team of its ownYou Might Be a Fit If...Have at least 2 years as a line manager directly managing teams of six to ten people—or clear readiness to grow into that roleYou've been a line manager for at least two years, directly managing teams of six to ten people—or you're on a clear path there and want to grow into itYou have hands-on experience with AWS or GCP and strong database troubleshooting skillsYou've seen real scale—on the order of at least a million requests per minuteYou can troubleshoot across databases, networking, compute, Docker, Kubernetes, and other aspects of infrastructureYou care as much about developer productivity and AI tooling as you do about raw infrastructureYou know on-call practices, SLAs, SLOs, and SRE practices generallyYou want to stay hands-on and grow into a fuller managerial role over timeYou move fast, with the same appetite as the rest of HarperNice to HaveYour own network to draw on for hiring—otherwise, comfort working closely with recruitersExperience building developer productivity tooling and AI harnesses for other engineering teamsExperience building a team from a very small basePrior startup experience—especially at a company scaling through hypergrowthCompensation & LogisticsSalary: $225,000–$275,000Location: San Francisco, in-office. Staff Software Engineer, Backend

Remote

About Genius AI Genius AI is building technology to help local businesses run themselves. Genius AI products do the admin work that keeps practitioners from the work they love and the people they serve. From GlossGenius to Reception, its products work 24/7 on busywork like booking, marketing, client management, finances, staff and inventory management, and more. Genius AI technology has saved businesses 106M in admin hours, earned them $2.0B in additional revenue, and facilitated more than 624M client touch points. About the Role Genius AI is building 0-to-1 AI products we expect to be a massive revenue driver, and this role sits at the center of that build. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you'll be the technical anchor for our highest-innovation teams: setting architectural direction, validating options through proof-of-concepts, and turning ambitious initiatives into clear, buildable roadmaps. This is an IC role with real leadership weight, roughly 60% architecture, planning, and technical direction, 40% hands-on building. The person in this role will be a force multiplier: unblocking engineers before they know they're stuck, making the hardest technical calls so the team doesn't lose momentum, and setting a new standard for what great backend engineering looks like at Genius AI. You won't be maintaining systems someone else designed, you'll be raising the ceiling on what this team can build, and doing it in a way that makes everyone around you better in the process. This role is remote in the Greater Toronto Area. What You'll Do Architect and own the technical direction of AI-powered products and 0-to-1 builds, weighing long-term trade-offs with precision and keeping a healthy backlog of forward-looking, build-ready work Integrate AI models and LLMs into customer-facing products, not as experiments, but as production systems with real reliability and performance requirements Shape how Genius AI builds with AI, your architectural decisions will define what's possible across the product for years Write high-quality code and rapidly ship proof-of-concepts to validate architectural options and tackle the team's hardest technical challenges before they become blockers Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering leadership to translate ambiguous business goals into well-architected initiatives with clear sequencing and minimal rework Proactively identify and resolve systemic technical debt before it slows the team down, unblock engineers, raise the quality bar, and make the people around you disproportionately more effective What We're Looking For 7+ years of professional engineering experience with a strong backend focus, and a track record of owning system design and architectural choices for high-scale or high-growth products Already building with AI as a structural part of how you work, you've integrated LLMs into production systems, used AI tooling to accelerate your development workflow, and have a sharp point of view on where AI changes what's architecturally possible Ship fast and course-correct, you're comfortable making architectural calls with incomplete information, iterating rapidly in production, and treating ambiguity as a feature of early-stage work, not a reason to slow down Deep Kotlin expertise with strong intuitions about backend architecture, service design, and performance at scale (TypeScript experience is a plus) Solid command of modern cloud infrastructure: AWS and Kubernetes, at the level of someone who can navigate it confidently without being a pure infra specialist Natural collaborator who can align PMs, designers, and engineering teams around a shared technical vision and keep execution moving without friction Exceptional communicator who can make complex architectural trade-offs legible to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders Benefits & Perks Competitive health & dental insurance options Flexible PTO Annual stipend for professional development and continued learning High performers at 5 years receive a $5,000 bonus to use however you recharge best Paid parental leave Fertility and adoption benefits via Carrot Local events - in-person gathering opportunities throughout the year for our distributed team At GlossGenius, we celebrate our differences and are committed to creating a workplace where all employees feel supported and empowered to do their best work. We believe this benefits not only our employees but our product, customers, and community as well. GlossGenius is proud to be an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer. Personal Information: Notice at Collection for Employees and Applicants Agency SubmissionsIf a resume or applicant is submitted to Genius AI by a third party without a signed search agreement in place, it will become the property of Genius AI and no fee will be paid, irrespective of whether the candidate is hired. Genius AI may use automated tools, including artificial intelligence and machine learning systems (AI Tools), to assist in evaluating applicants’ qualifications and fitness for the position. These AI Tools may be used alongside human review during one or more stages of the recruiting process, including application screening, skills assessments, and interviewing. No final hiring decision will be made solely by AI Tools without human oversight.

Nanit

Senior Backend Engineer, Growth (US)

New York, NY
125k+
28d ago

Nanit is moving families beyond overwhelm by transforming how parents understand their baby's early years. We combine advanced AI, real-world data from billions of sleep hours, and clinical expertise to deliver the clarity and confidence every parent deserves. Trusted by over one million families and backed by $125M in funding, we're building an entirely new category: predictive parenting intelligence. Here, your work directly impacts millions of families. Our team of scientists, engineers, and parents is small but mighty - we share a mission to make early childhood easier, healthier, and more connected. If you want to work on technology that genuinely matters, join us. You'll be the founding backend engineer on a new Growth team - a cross-functional squad owning the full customer funnel, from a parent first considering Nanit through purchase, subscription, engagement, and eventually referring to us or buying again. You'll also be the first R&D engineer based at our US site, hybrid, with your manager and the rest of the team in a different time zone - so you'll need to hold context, make decisions, unblock yourself, and know when a question is worth raising rather than waiting on a sync. Your closest day-to-day partners will be mobile engineers and product managers What You'll Be Doing Own the backend behind growth bets. Build and ship the services powering paywalls, subscription tiering, onboarding journeys, in-app messaging, referral mechanics, trial models, and checkout bundling. Make growth measurable. Build and extend the experimentation and instrumentation layer - feature flags, experiment assignment, event tracking - so every bet the team makes can be evaluated on real data rather than opinion. Work end to end across the funnel. Move between acquisition, activation, and retention work as the roadmap demands, rather than owning a single narrow surface. Partner tightly with mobile and product. Most of what you build is consumed by our iOS and Android apps. You'll design API contracts in conversation with the engineers using them and with the PMs shaping the experiments. Operate with high agency. Take ambiguous problems, decide on an approach, communicate it clearly in writing, and ship. Escalate deliberately, not by default. Set the pattern for US engineering at Nanit. How you work - documentation, async communication, on-call, review habits - becomes the template for everyone who follows. Anchor on-call coverage in your time zone. Be first responder for production alerts during your working hours, extending the backend group toward true follow-the-sun coverage. Triage, mitigate, escalate what you can't, and hand off open threads in writing. Contribute to the backend guild. Help drive best practices, guidelines, and standards across R&D, and keep the US perspective represented in them. Qualifications Professional Experience: 5+ years of backend software development with strong coding skills and solid experience in software design and architecture. Proven Autonomy: Demonstrated success working with significant independence - ideally in a distributed team with limited timezone overlap with your manager or peers. Written Communication: Excellent asynchronous communication. You write clearly enough that decisions and context survive without a meeting. Product Mindset: Comfort with ambiguity and with shipping to learn. You care about the outcome metric, not only the ticket. High-Scale Systems: Experience with critical production systems and techniques like load balancing, caching, and distributed systems. Web Services: Proficiency designing and maintaining APIs consumed by mobile clients (REST, gRPC, WebSocket). Experimentation and Analytics: Hands-on experience with A/B testing infrastructure, feature flags, and event instrumentation (e.g., Unleash, Mixpanel). Testing: Solid experience in testing methodologies and test automation frameworks. Monitoring and Observability: Proficient with tools like Grafana and Prometheus. Delivery Track Record: Proven experience delivering backend projects successfully. Agile Familiarity: Knowledge of Agile methodologies. Containers and Orchestration: Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes is an advantage. Preferred Skills Experience with consumer subscription products - billing, plan tiering, App Store and Google Play in-app purchases, or Stripe. Prior work on a growth, monetization, or lifecycle team. Ability to independently take a concept from research to production. Enthusiasm for new technologies and willingness to explore them. Commitment to well-crafted and rigorously tested code. Willingness to travel to Tel Aviv for onboarding and periodically thereafter. Why You’ll Love Working Here: Hybrid in-office schedule Remote work from home month in August Flexible PTO (we trust you to take the time you need) Equity options so you can share in our growth Paid parental leave for all new parents Employee discounts on Nanit products Work from home stipend Monthly team events What We Offer We provide an innovative and inclusive work environment, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. We believe in productivity rather than hours on the clock and value collaboration and innovative thinking. We take pride in our customer satisfaction and believe that our success comes from delivering exceptional value to our customers. EEO, Salary and Location: This is a hybrid role that will require prospective candidates to be in our NYC office 2-3 days per week. Salary Range: $180K to $200K base salary + equity and benefits. The base pay is one component of Nanit's total compensation package, which may also include access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, and basic life insurance. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors. We are proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We provide employment opportunities without regard to age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other protected class.
